At the first full committee meeting in 1973, a number of working groups were set up, including The Nasty Smells working party whose remit β€œwill include the improvement of the tattier side of Teddington such as dumped rubbish and cars, litter in general, blocked drains, fouling by dogs, the condition of the local baths and out-dated equipment in local recreation grounds.” By the next meeting, the name had changed to the Nice and Tidy (Hygiene) Group and subsequently transitioned to the Clean up Teddington (CUT) Group in 1983 followed by the Tidy Group and ultimately the Environment Group in 2008

Over the years members of this Group, clad in their yellow tabards, have often been seen in various parts of the Town litterpicking and generally tidying up and regularly cleaning up the re-cycling sites at the Cedar Road car park, Elmfield Avenue and North Lane car park (generally, if erroneously, referred to as Tesco’s car park). The latter task is akin to painting the Forth Railway Bridge. The Group is also involved in reporting to LBRuT such matters as graffiti, fly tipping, blocked kerbside drains and dealing with the eye-gouging plastic ties that are often left on lampposts when the posters, which they held in place are removed. They are known in the environment business as Lamp Post Whiskers, an apt description.

Of particular significance each year and one which we are especially enthusiastic about is the clean-up and litter picking around the Remembrance Day Memorial outside Teddington Memorial Hospital.

From time to time, special campaigns are launched to raise awareness of the need to maintain the cleanliness and tidiness of Teddington. One such was launched in the 1990s with the support of Teddington Bear.

Well done Brownies

Brownie pack followed this rehearsal by a practical litter pick. It went down well and we are happy to discuss similar opportunities with local schools and similar groups. We come equipped, of course, with our stock of litterpicking tools.

Environment policy matters such as the proposed third runway at Heathrow Airport, air quality and similar matters are addressed as necessary.
