The Group liaises with the Council and public transport providers to ensure that all residents and visitors, including anyone with a disability, travelling as pedestrian, cyclist, bus or train passenger, motorcyclist or driver, can travel safely through Teddington with the minimum of delay.
The quality of our local roads and transport infrastructure helps to ensure that Teddington maintains its reputation to be a great place to work and live. We aim to ensure that Council officers consult us whenever transport plans or parking schemes which affect Teddington are proposed, and we seek to ensure that the councillors and officers are aware of our safety, transport and parking policies. Where appropriate, we will formally advise them of the Society’s views and/or recommendations during consultations over specific issues.
Current Issues
The Group is limited in what it can address depending on the number of volunteers in the Group – so more volunteers are always welcome. You don’t need to be an expert – none of us are.
Currently, issues which we are covering include:
· Poor quality of pavements and repairs compared with the rest of the Borough
· Lack of Community toilets in the main shopping streets
· Quality and quantity of road signs
· Anti-social parking of ebikes and cycling on pavements
· Richmond Council’s Transport Strategy 2040
· TfL’s Big Community Tour about delivering a more accessible, sustainable and affordable transport system.
For more details on these issues, please see our Tidings newsletter.
Teddington Station Lifts
The Society has campaigned for years to improve the accessibility for those with mobility issues by the installation of lifts. That has finally come to fruition and the official opening of the lifts and refurbished footbridge will take place on Friday 23 May 2025.
Teddington Station Ticket Office
South Western Railway was proposing to close all of their ticket offices, and to transition the staff to multi-skilled roles to help customers with all aspects of their journey. At the same time staffing levels would be reduced, resulting in Teddington Station being unmanned for most of the time. We were very much opposed to these proposals and, along with many other local societies, we made strong representations to SWR. As a result of these, SWR backtracked on those proposals.
