Night Time Strategy
Richmond Council have been consulting on their draft Night Time Strategy. Their vision for Teddington is set out here.
Our initial thought on the Night Time Strategy recommendations is that Teddington is not the first place people come to for late night activities or entertainment - they are more likely to go to Kingston or Richmond. We responded to the survey as follows;
General Recommendations
The survey could have been better publicised. The Teddington Society would have been happy to contribute directly to the survey design and we would have informed our members of the opportunity to respond.
The High Street and Broad Street are completely or partially conservation areas. Care should be taken with 'shopfront lighting interventions' as there is already a substantial amount of neon in some shops. We would prefer that the street lighting is made more plentiful. The council should consider lighting the path in Udney Hall Gardens.
Transport
Lime bikes are being abandoned in awkward spots making pavements hazardous for the elderly and disabled and those with prams. More should be done to allow older people to go out at night - better transport and brighter street lighting would help. The display and lighting at bus stops should be improved. Many stops do not have a bus departure display.
Economy
There are many places in Teddington where 'spilling out' onto the pavement would be extremely difficult for passers by due to the narrow pavements. Lighting should be appropriate for the area - too bright shop lights look garish - particularly too much use of neon signs. Consideration should be given to conservation areas and buildings of townscape merit. There should be more toilets available - both during the day and at night.
People
The survey has not directly addressed activities for young people - like sports clubs or youth clubs. The Council should be creating spaces for young people to engage in activities.
