Teddington Direct River Abstraction Scheme

The Teddington Direct River Abstraction (TDRA) scheme plans to provide up to 75 million extra litres of water per day during times of prolonged dry weather.

During droughts, Thames Water (TW) plan to take water from the Thames using a new intake located upstream of Teddington Weir. The water would then be transferred via a new underground tunnel to their existing Thames Lee Tunnel (TLT), which runs from Hampton to the Lee Valley reservoirs. To keep river levels balanced, TW would replace the water taken at Teddington with the same amount of recycled water from their proposed new Tertiary Treatment Plant at Mogden Sewage Treatment Works.

The Statutory Consultation is now up and running until 26th August 2025. Please see their consultation page for links to have your say.

Save Our Lands and River (SOLAR) are leading the opposition - see here for their views. SOLAR do not advise using the TW feedback questionnaire as it does not give people a chance to reject the scheme overall. Rather, they suggest responding by email or post. Alternatively, you can pick up a SOLAR postcard objecting to the option TW have chosen. They are available from various local locations including The Anglers pub and the Flying Cloud Café at Teddington Lock. All you need to do is add your name and postcode on the postcard and drop it in a post box.
